Since I am one of those people who has nothing very exciting to do in their life, I made myself a list of random things to do for the following year. Guess what? I took three days off from work just so I could attend the three-day Anime Festival Asia, or AFA for short. But then, because I am on hibernation mode due to the lazy, bed-weather, I only attended one day, Sunday, which is the last. I thought that more people with more interesting costumes will come as it was the last day. Turns out that my assumption was wrong. I knew deep inside that if I can only attend one day for the event, it should have been on the Saturday/second day. Reason being people who got tired, cosplayers I mean, could still rest the next day for school or work. But since I went on a Sunday which I can’t do anything about now, I just had to enjoy it.
Anime Festival Asia Singapore 2014 happened last 5th, 6th and 7th December. For the past two years that I attended the event, it was always on November so I am pretty surprised that it was on December this year. I only went on the last day of the vent so I could not exactly say whether the whole event was good or not. But apparently, it was the biggest event for AFA Singapore so far. And I enjoyed it.
I only go to the event to see cosplays, take pictures, and eat takoyaki. Unfortunately there is no takoyaki stall this year, but I enjoyed hunting for characters of Mekakucity Actors to take their photos. I like Shuuya Kano, Tsubomi Kido and Haruka Kokonose/Konoha/Black Konoha out of all the characters for the anime/manga. I saw cosplays for all three of them but I only got one good shot of Kano, which is fine because he’s my real favorite. I saw a cosplay for Black Konoha but he was about to take a cab then so I could not stop him just to take his photo. He seems to be in a hurry.
I realized that not because they were wearing costumes makes it always alright to take their photos. I believe that they would appreciate if they were asked for permission first before taking their photo. Well, since they were on costume, they would want to portray the character the best they can, and they wouldn’t want to spoil any photos of them for sure. Also, they need some private time, so if they are not in the convention grounds, it would be better to leave them alone. I try to do that because I thinks it’s only right to respect them. And I never forgot to give them my thanks, whether by word or gesture.
Because I am currently fond of Mekakucity Actors/Kagerou Project I only thought of looking for cosplays in their character. I forgot that the Naruto manga just finished recently, and because of that, many cosplayers would want to make a tribute by doing a cosplay in the characters of the anime/manga. I actually saw a group of them, and they all seem to get along well with each other. Besides Naruto, I also forgot that several new characters have appeared in One Piece, and several people also did a good cosplay of them. I thought that One Piece characters are becoming mainstream so I try not to take too much photos of them. But apparently, there were several interesting cosplays of them! Why, when I dropped by on Saturday (6th December) to buy tickets for the following day, I saw a cosplay of Koala which I did not see the next day. But there were still a lot of cosplays for One Piece characters on the day I attended the event. There was a Sabo, Doflamingo, Issho, Sanji, Zoro, and Law (Dressrosa disguise versions), Chopper, Luffy, Ace and a lot more.
Another thing that I look forward to when attending AFA is that I could see posters of new anime shows, which of course I have no news about. I do not watch TV and I only watch anime/movie online so I have no idea what’s new and what’s not. I still do not end up watching them right away though. They were just for reference.
This time I did not take much pictures of people on cosplay, unless I like the character, because I am too lazy. Honestly speaking, I haven’t touched my Canon camera for several months, and I actually forgot how to use it a little. I have been using my Samsung Galaxy Note II phone to take photos of just about anything and everything. I get satisfactory results anyway, but there were times that I wish I had my DSLR camera with me. There were a lot more options for manual set-up of the camera for DSLR as compared with the phone. So what I do is make use of what I have in my Samsung phone to take great shot of what I want. I still like the photos anyway, and some of my friends give me feedback that my photos were nice.
And I took my time taking photos of action figures on display. I actually liked the photos I took of the figures as compared to the cosplays. And man, I really tried my best to take a clear and nice shot of a Trafalgar Law action figure. I really love his character.
Bottom line: I enjoyed the event even though there is no takoyaki (I just felt that it would be more authentic if I buy it from an event like that), and that I did not attend the event on the day that I know more cosplayers will show up (blame the bed-weather for that). The NicoNico stage had some interesting performance up, and there were awesome figures for a lot of anime characters. Did I forget to mention that there was actually a cosplay for Sailor Moon on the event? Why, yes there is. Apparently, a new animated film for Sailor Moon will be out soon. I was a big fan when I was a kid, like seven years old, but now I don’t know. But that sure is nostalgic yeah? For love and justice…in the name of the moon, I will punish you!
Here’s the link to the photo’s in my Flickr account: Anime Festival Asia Singapore 2014 . I really did not take much photos.
